Drupal 8 Support & Upgrades to Drupal 11

Drupal 8 stopped receiving security updates on 2 November 2021. I move Drupal 8 sites to Drupal 11 for a fixed price, with the same design, the same content and the same web addresses. Nothing to pay until you're happy.

Prices

Upgrades are a fixed price, starting at £500 + VAT for a typical small business or charity site (€600 in Europe, $750 in the United States). I look at your site first and confirm the exact figure in writing before any work starts. Redesign, mobile improvements, accessibility work and new features are priced separately, after the upgrade.

Why a Drupal 8 site cannot stay as it is

Drupal 8 runs on Symfony 3 and PHP 7, both long out of support. These are three of the holes that were patched while Drupal 8 was still supported; since November 2021 there is nobody to patch the next one.

Remote code execution through web services

Sites with the REST or JSON:API modules enabled could be made to run attacker-supplied code with the web server's permissions. SA-CORE-2019-003

jQuery UI cross-site scripting

An outdated jQuery UI let attackers run JavaScript in the browser of a logged-in editor and act as them. SA-CORE-2022-002

File download access bypass

A path handling flaw that let visitors fetch private uploads and configuration exports. SA-CORE-2023-005

Old PHP costs money too

Drupal 8 needs PHP 7, which hosts are now switching off or charging extra for. IONOS, for example, charges £15.62 a month to keep PHP 7.4 running on a domain. An upgraded site runs on current PHP at no extra charge.

What a fixed-price upgrade includes

Same look

Your design is rebuilt on Drupal 11 so visitors see the site they know.

All your content

Pages, news, events, products, images, documents and users are carried across.

Same web addresses

Every existing URL keeps working, so your Google rankings and links are kept.

Security updates again

Current Drupal 11 and PHP, back on the security release schedule.

Faster on phones

Images and code are brought up to date, which usually improves Google's mobile score.

Nothing to pay until you're happy

You check the new site on a test address first. You pay when you are satisfied.

What the upgrade involves

Drupal 8 to Drupal 11 is an upgrade rather than a rebuild: the site moves up through Drupal 9 and 10 to 11 on a test copy, with every module updated to a current release and any code that no longer works replaced. Your theme, content and configuration come with it.

That is usually quicker than a Drupal 7 move, and the price starts at the same fixed figure. I check each page of the new site against the original before you see it.

How it works

1. A free look

You send the site address. I check the version, the modules and the size of the site.

2. A fixed price

You get the figure in writing. No hourly billing and no surprises.

3. The upgrade

I build the Drupal 11 site on a test address and check every page against the original.

4. You approve

When you are happy, you pay and the new site goes live with no downtime.

Hosting and ongoing support

If you would like, I can host the upgraded site with security updates included, for £35 + VAT a month or £350 + VAT a year. Or the new site goes back to your current host. Monthly support plans cover updates, monitoring and small changes.

Questions people ask

Is my site too customised for a fixed price?

I look at it first and confirm the figure in writing before anything starts, so if your site is bigger than usual you know before you commit.

Should we move to WordPress instead?

That is usually a rebuild: new design, content copied across and old links broken. Moving to Drupal 11 keeps what you already have, for far less.

Can our current developer stay involved?

Yes. I'm happy to work alongside them, or hand the finished site over to them.

Do you host as well?

Yes, with security updates included, for £35 + VAT a month or £350 + VAT a year. Or the new site goes back to your current host.

Some of our modules have no Drupal 11 version. Is that a problem?

Usually not. Most have a successor or an equivalent, and I confirm any that need replacing in the written figure before anything starts.

Will we lose our Google rankings?

No. Every existing web address keeps working on the new site, so search engines and links carry straight over.

What about the mobile layout or accessibility?

Once the site is moved, those can be improved and priced separately. The upgrade itself keeps everything as it is.
